Radio Stoke fills me with 'dismay'

I'VE been very pleased recently to read other people's comments regarding Radio Stoke.

I agreed with all that was being said, but thought I was on my own and showing signs of becoming a 'grumpy old man'.

I was first live in the studio on Radio Stoke in 1991 on the late Sammy Plank's programme, and have featured many times since on various other programmes over the years.

It is with great dismay, therefore, that I have seen the station slide to its current level of output.

My job as a young boy was to always ensure that we had a fully charged accumulator handy to spark up the wireless – the days when the programmes encouraged you to develop mental pictures of the shows being broadcast; Dick Barton, Special Agent; Valentine Dyall, Your Storyteller, the Man in Black, Paul Temple, etc.

Now, if you haven't got a computer or laptop etc to go to Facebook, Twitter or a web page, you might not have a clue as to what is going on, i.e. you now have to watch the radio.

Many of the current presenters seem to think that no one existed before 1970, their tastes in 'music' would have been classed as 'static interference' years ago, and they spend most of the show telling us what they have done and how many 'gigs' they have been to.

Another disturbing thing is, in these times of austerity, what has Stuart George (definitely one of the best on his own) done to the hierarchy, such that they have lumbered him over the last few months with an assistant?

What a pleasure it is when holidaying in the Lake District to be able to listen, 9am until noon each weekday, to ex-Stoke presenter Kevin Fernyhough. What a loss he has been.
