WCJS Radio Cares has announced that the two charities that will be the recipients of the proceeds of their first annual benefit concert scheduled on September 28, 2013 and held at Bethesday Blues and Jazz Supper Club, are Ghanaian Mothers’ Hope and Innocents at Risk - featuring 8 time Grammy Award winner Arturo Sandoval.

Towson, MD (PRWEB) August 06, 2013

In addition to Arturo Sandoval, the star studded line-up includes Grammy Award winning jazz pianist John Beasley, Toni Redd, Joel Del Rosario, Russel Blake, Surewill, Drew Davidsen, Darryl E. Jones, EC3, Marshall Keys, and Grace Kelly.

WCJS, an internet radio station with over half a million listeners world-wide, founded by Cres O'Neal is devoted to jazz, blues and talk. During an interview on the program, “Jazzin Em Up with Cres O’Neal,” with jazz guitarist, and GMH supporter Drew Davidsen, Ms O’Neal was moved to choose Ghanaian Mothers’ Hope as a recipient of the proceeds from the first annual benefit concert sponsored by WCJS Radio.

Ghanaian Mothers Hope is a non-profit that is working to build preschools, playgrounds, and medical posts, providing health education to children and their parents in Ghana.

When most of us think about childhood we conjure up images of laughing, carefree children. Access to basic education, health care, and safe places to learn and to play rarely enter our thoughts. Regrettably, millions of children throughout the world are not as fortunate. In Ghana, West Africa, many children are forced to stay home to care for younger siblings, sacrificing their own opportunity to receive an education.

Since 2005 Ghanaian Mothers Hope (GMH), a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization has been educating children and empowering villages in Ghana, West Africa by building preschools, playgrounds, and health posts. Each year, a group of American volunteers unselfishly devote their time and energy in accomplishing these goals.

Germs and soil-borne worms are the most common problem for children in sub-tropical climates - where access to clean water makes personal hygiene and sanitation problematic. Each repeated infection leads to malnutrition, mental retardation, and loss of time in the classroom. The cumulative effect robs a child of a piece of his or her future. By 10 years of age a child may have had 36 worm infestations. The damage sustained in childhood can have irreversible effects in adulthood.

Ghanaian Mothers Hope received a grant from The Child Health Foundation to specially design a good health promoting coloring book for the children in Ghana, West Africa. Jazz guitarist, Drew Davidsen, wrote a special song to go along with the coloring book.

Since 2004, Innocents at Risk has been working to raise awareness about the horrors of child trafficking in America and around the world. The organization conducts educational outreach programs through churches, clubs, organizations, schools and embassies. Its awareness DVD has been used at every major embassy and throughout the United States as an educational resource.

With the purpose of arming flight attendants with the necessary tools to combat child trafficking, in 2008, Innocents At Risk launched the Flight Attendant Initiative, now called Blue Lightening by Homeland Security. The organization's brochure titled, "Protecting Women and Children from Human Trafficking", provides vital information on how to recognize and report the human trafficking that flight attendants see daily. To date, Innocents at Risk has reached approximately one-third of American Airlines’ 19,000 flight attendants; is expanding the program to other airlines; and, the brochure and training DVDs are now being distributed to all major transportation outlets. Through this initiative, thousands of young lives are being saved.
