Several organisations held a host of events to mark the historic day. While schoolchildren and professionals took part in cultural shows and rendered patriotic songs, those who stayed at home celebrated the day listening to speeches and watching shows.
The Resident Welfare Associations in several parts of the City organised flag hoisting programmes. At an awareness programme at the Cubbon Park, children were explained about the importance of Independence Day and the struggle by our freedom fighters. For adults, there was a free BP check-up.
Apart from cleaning the road, the volunteers cleared the weeds, put up tree guards and painted electricity poles. The 93.5 Red FM radio station made an attempt to break the Limca Book of World Records for getting maximum number of people sing "Hum Honge Kamiyaab" live.
As many as 2,240 people, including schoolchildren, teachers and administration staff of various educational institutions participated.The MG Road boulevard was buzzing with activities throughout the day.
