Four men were hurt in a boating accident last week, but accident attorney Michael Steinger says they made smart choices.

Four boaters were injured in a boating accident near Twin Rocks last week. Attorney Michael Steinger of Steinger, Iscoe & Greene says boating accidents are tragically common, and that this one could have been much worse if those aboard weren’t properly prepared.
The men were out enjoying a day on a private fishing boat when the boat ran aground, according to San Diego 6 News (retrieved 06.30.2014). There were five men aboard, and only one got through the sudden collision unharmed. One of the four injured men is listed in critical condition after the accident.
But that wasn’t the end of their ordeal. Steinger says that unlike a car accident, after a boating accident it’s often hard to get medical attention. That’s exactly what happened to the injured boaters, who could not be reached by a helicopter rescue due to weather conditions.
“After a car accident you dial 911 and wait for the paramedics,” Steinger said. “But after a boating accident you have to get on the radio and see if anyone can come for you at all—even if you’re taking on water.”
Steinger says that the men aboard the damaged boat seemed properly prepared.
“Often when we hear about a boating accident, the people on board didn’t have proper safety equipment like a good radio. That can turn deadly fast,” he said. “These men were able to radio for help and hang in there until help arrived.”
Fire Department lifeguards came in a boat and took the men to safety.
