Amateur ham radio operators will take part in a national emergency communications event this Saturday and Sunday at the Baron Hugo Gazebo in Milton.
Cities and towns across the United States have been assisted during emergencies by amateur communicators, who provide immediate critical information, according to the Mystical Valley Communications Group. The group will provide public demonstrations of its equipment throughout this weekend's "Field Day."
The Field Day is the climax of the week-long "Amateur Radio Week" put on by the Amateur Radio Relay League. Using only emergency power, ham operators will construct operating stations in parks, shopping malls, schools and backyards around the country to send messages in many forms without the use of phone systems, internet or any other infrastructure that can be comprised in a crisis, according to the Mystic Valley group.
