Tens of thousands of children from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras have been pouring over the US-Mexico border into Texas, New Mexico and Arizona since October 2013.
The immigrants are mostly unaccompanied, undocumented children and teens who are overloading the U.S. Border Patrol, temporary shelters and immigration courts.
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) told Reuters last week that the U.S. should create refugee application programs in Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala where children would apply for asylum at U.S. embassy offices.
However, Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff Joe Arpaio wants President Obama to send U.S. troops across the Mexican border to stop the child immigrants.
“If we are worried about the danger, then I would send the military across the border, work with their military bilaterally and get the job done,” Sheriff Arpaio told the "Aaron Klein Investigative Radio" show on New York’s 970 AM, notes WorldNet Daily.
“That’s what I would do and we’d clean up this mess,” added Sheriff Arpaio. “Of course, you have to get the Mexican president to okay it. I would just go in there and have a few drinks with him and get the job done.”
"Why do [the child immigrants] have to go to court?" stated Sheriff Arpaio. "The minute you cross the border put them on an airplane and send them back. Either they [convicted illegal alien felons] are coming across that border multiple times or they are being dumped on the streets of Arizona."
Apparently, Sheriff Arpaio is unaware that U.S. law requires the federal government to care for unaccompanied minors until their status is decided by an immigration court. Children who come with a parent or another adult must also go through immigration courts per U.S. law.
