Drafted in the second round of the 1983 draft out of Louisiana State University, Marshall played 12 seasons as defensive lineman in the NFL and was selected to three NFL Pro Bowls. He spent most of his career with the New York Giants where he helped the team win Super Bowls XXI and XXV. Today Marshall is a professor of Sports Management and Executive-in-Residence at Seton Hall University and also runs an instructional camp for youth football players in Florida.
During the interview, Marshall opened up about his recently completed book, When the Cheering Stops, which he authored with CBSsports.com writer William Bendetson about the 1990 season and Super Bowl XXV. He talked about how the transition from "professional athlete" to "former professional athlete" can be difficult, not just emotionally but logistically too. Marshall explained how hard it is to get insurance after your NFL career, and how many NFL players are uninsurable after their career is over. According to Marshall, the cost to insure a former NFL player can cost upwards of million dollars.
“One of the best pieces of advice I can give is to find yourself a veteran player that made the transition from football and keep him close,” said Marshall. “You need some good people in your life. Not people who just want your money."
Marshal also said it's important for former players to look out for their financial well-being too, so they don't lose the hard-earned money they made during an NFL career. "Make sure you have good financial advisor after pro football," he said.
One key to preparing Marshall for life after football, he said, was working during the NFL's off season, which he did for many years. He told Haley that he learned certain skills and had guys teach him the commercial printing business, the garment business and real Wall Street. This helped set the table for when he retired to start garment business that made NFL apparel and also do some work in the mortgage business.
Today, Marshall works for SS Funding, a company that provides off balance financing, advance money and financial advice and strategies to current professional athletes.
Co-host GJ Reynolds said, "Marshall hit it on the nose. You need to have a transition plan and surround your self with the right people, as well as educate yourself if you choose to succeed in your post athletic career."
