This is Nottingham --

A HANDFUL of Nottingham radio personalities had good reason to help themselves to the champagne at the Sony Radio Academy Awards.

Gem 106's Sam and Amy took gold in the Breakfast Show category for less than 10 million listeners.

According to the judges, Sam and Amy "achieve a rare on-air chemistry that is warm, genuine and honest. They've created an inclusive family-friendly breakfast offer with originality and creative storytelling to the fore."

And they weren't the only ones to take home silverware. BBC Radio 5 Live's Not Just Cricket – co-hosted by Notts and England bowler Graeme Swann and co-produced by cricket journalist and former Notts bowler Andy Afford – took silver in the Best Sports Programme category.

The awards are the radio broadcasting equivalent of the Baftas, and taking home a gong is no small achievement.

"Winning a Sony Gold is the absolute pinnacle of achievement in the radio industry," said Gem 106 programme director Mike Newman.

"To be recognised as having the best breakfast show in the country is a wonderful achievement for Gem 106 and Sam and Amy."

Andy Afford, who originally pitched to 5 Live the idea of a cricket show featuring live music, celebrities and plenty of non-cricket content, did not go to the ceremony expecting to come back with an award.

"We thought we were there for a good time," he said.

The show, which airs occasionally and was last broadcast on May 5 from the Trent Bridge Long Room, was pipped to the gold by 5 Live's Olympics coverage – perhaps a given after the triumphal hype of 2012.

The next Not Just Cricket will be an Ashes preview that will air right before the first Test in July.
