Premiere: Porridge Radio - 'Eugh'

A curious plasticine-fuelled video from the Brighton group...

*Porridge Radio* make morbid pop vibrations with a personal edge.

Reminiscent of The Raincoats ramshackle charm but fused with a slightly more laid back vibe, the Brighton five-piece are a world unto themselves.

A debut album emerged on Memorials of Distinction last year, given a full vinyl press a few weeks back.

Standout cut 'Eugh' seems to burrow itself in the ambient, the interlocked guitar chimes echoing the numbed emotional state of the lyrics.

Ella Margolin directs the curious plasticine-fuelled video, and in an odd kind of way it all feels perfectly apt.

Porridge Radio tell Clash: "It's a sickly sweet saccharine tribute to heartbreak and spitting out the venom of self-loathing. The video itself echoes the feeling of the song with a hypnotic story about relationships forming and falling apart, told by manipulated lumps of clay and nostalgic flashes of scenic views."

Tune in now.

Porridge Radio are set to play the following shows:

*July*
1 *Brighton* Green Door Store
2 *London* DIY Space for London
3 *Bristol* The Old England Pub
4 *Cardiff* Gwdihw Cafe Bar
5 *Manchester* Jimmy's NQ Bar
6 *Glasgow* Transmission Gallery

The goal of the new website was to highlight their team’s creative personality with a hip and innovative design aesthetic. The brand also wanted to maximize their visibility in search engines, while expanding their online audience.

Live Report: Download Festival 2017

Live Report: Download Festival 2017 Metal's premiere weekender sizzles in the heat...

What a difference a bit of sun makes! For the first time in three years, rather than resembling a cesspit, *Download Festival* is basking in blue skies and blazing sunshine. Sadly, Clash can only attend this years' rock and metal bash on Friday (boo!!) but even then there's a vast amount of heavy goodness on offer.

Our day begins with Aussie’s *Northlane* who open main stage by melding techy textures with whopping, anthemic choruses and monstrous riffs, no better than on set standouts 'Rot' and 'Savage'.

Over the last four years, *Motionless In White* have steadily worked their way up the Download ladder, finally making their main stage debut today. And now they're here, they look like they absolutely own the place. Towering frontman Chris "Motionless" Cerulli stalks the stage in floor length black and ghoulish makeup (no mean feat in this heat) while the band's Manson, Splitknot and Zombie-inspired metal goes down an absolute storm. Songs from recent album ‘Graveyard Shift’ sound great, and while the band's biggest bangers, ‘Devils Night’, ‘Reincarnate’ and ‘Abigail’ already sounded massive, now more than ever, they seem like they were made to be played on the biggest of stages.

- - -

It's exciting to see new blood emerge to take the torch forward...

- - -

Having already toured with and won over Iron Maiden's famously dismissive fan base, second stage at Download must seem like a breeze for *The Raven Age*. Even so, there's no sign of complacency, just the knowing swagger of a band fully aware of their own potential. Although their metalcore has been inspired by that genre’s golden age; Bullet For My Valentine, Trivium and Killswitch Engage, it's exciting to see new blood emerge to take the torch forward - these guys are one to watch.

A few months ago, progster barbarians *Mastodon* released ‘Emperor Of Sand’, their seventh album and perhaps the best of their career, if not the best metal record of the year. Festivals aren't always the best arena for airing new material but Mastodon have never shied away from the bold statements. Unfortunately though, as powerful and monstrous as the quartet sound, there's a breeze on the air and at times the dazzling little intricacies and jaw-dropping complexities of tracks like ‘The Wolf Is Loose’ and ‘Andromeda’ quite literally drift out of earshot. Saying that though, by now Mastodon have got so much gas in the tank they simply aren’t capable of bad performances.

Over in the Avalanche tent, *Code Orange* are being introduced by WWE NXT wrestler Aleister Black in front of a packed tent. Recent album ‘Forever’ is a devastating show of force and aggression and it sounds absolutely rabid live. As the Pittsburgh quartet hit those first opening notes of track ‘Forever’, a roar goes up in the crowd that lets you know exactly how this set is going to go down. ‘Kill The Creator’ and ‘I Am King’ are furiously uncompromising and grungy belter ‘Bleeding In The Blur’ incite the most savage pits of the day so far.

Later, we manage to catch a few songs of *Suicidal Tendencies’* set. The party-loving, hardcore punks are always great fun and their sun-drenched afternoon set is a righteous of constant pits and “ST! ST!” gang chants.

Over on main, the vast crowd that meets *Five Finger Death Punch* is easily the biggest of the day so far. You have to wonder if FFDP are quickly becoming the metal equivalent of Babyshambles where part of the draw is wondering if unpredictable frontman Ivan Moody will turn up given his seemingly constant proximity to either quitting or being fired.

Of course two days after Download Ivan will announce he’s temporarily leaving the band, revealing a battle with addiction, but today, everything seems to go without a hitch. The Vegas metallers have been playing basically the same set list at every gig for years but no one here seems to care and every word to the bands knucklehead, meat and potatoes metal is bawled back at the band. They could headline Download one day if they don't implode first.

- - -

You have to wonder if FFDP are quickly becoming the metal equivalent of Babyshambles...

- - -

Moving into the evening, we catch the start of *Venom Prison's* rabid set in the Dogtooth stage. Easily the most vicious band of the day, opener ‘Syllogism’ is a hellish and violent hardcore racket that draws metalheads to the pits like moths to flames.

Back on main though, *Prophets Of Rage* are hands down the best band of the day. Comprised of Rage Against the Machine members, Tom Morello, Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford, with Public Enemy's Chuck D and Cyprus Hill's B-Real on the mic, playing the best of all three bands, sure it's a bit karaoke-esque, but make no mistake, its fucking banging. ‘Guerrilla Radio’, ‘Sleep Now In The Fire’, ‘Fight The Power’, ‘Insane In The Brain’… it's just classic after classic, bam, bam, bam, with a massive crowd going batshit for every single second.

Watching Rage tracks without Zach De la Rocha blazing upfront is never going to be the same, but there is no better person to perform these politically charged rockets then Chuck D who’s made a few political protests of his own over the years. And given the current climate, there's no better time to dive into these back catalogues.

Chuck D tells us to raise our fists and "rage like Corbyn," while Tom Morello lifts up his guitar to reveal the words "Fuck Trump" on the back. Later he plays a heartfelt, instrumental rendition of Audioslave’s ‘Like A Stone’ in tribute to "fallen comrade" Chris Cornell who died a week ago. A touching moment in an otherwise incendiary set that leaves the crowd pumped up for what's the follow.

Three songs into *System Of A Down's *set, it hits you just how many absolute stone-cold killers the Armenians have in their back pockets. Their opening salvo alone trots out ‘Suite Pee’, ‘Prison Song’ and ‘Violent Pornography’ and after that they just keep coming. ‘Aerials’, ‘Bounce!’, ‘Chop Suey’ ... every track causes pits of pandemonium, every one of them a reminder of just how utterly unique a proposition System Of A Down are: huge riffs colliding with Middle Eastern rhymes, batshit vocal melodies and demented lyrics.

This should have been a furious triumph – but while the tracks themselves sound perfect, transcendent and as ahead of their time as they were back in the day, the band themselves look bored to tears. Guitarist Daron Malakian seems irritated while vocalist Serj Tankian is merely going through the motions, sapping the white-hot heat that underpins their politically-charged fire. A closing trio of ‘Cigaro’, ‘Toxicity’ and ‘Sugar’ have the crowd in spasms but it’s not enough to save the end of Clash’s Download 2017 from being a strangely disappointing experience.

"Our Brand's Worse Than Trump" Democrats Demand "Toxic" Pelosi Step Aside, Trump Urges Her To Stay

Our Brand's Worse Than Trump Democrats Demand Toxic Pelosi Step Aside, Trump Urges Her To Stay *Update*: Nancy Pelosi does have one supporter who believes she should stay...

I certainly hope the Democrats do not force Nancy P out. That would be very bad for the Republican Party - and please let Cryin' Chuck stay!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 22, 2017

*  *  *

*Democrats' embarrassing special-election loss in Georgia,* after the liberal media built up unrealistic expectations, has *provoked a wave of bitter blowback that targets House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi*.

As Axios notes, it's part of a generational argument that's also driving the party's 2020 conversation.

*“It was a very rough night for Nancy Pelosi,”* said Sean Clegg, a Democratic strategist in San Francisco, adding that he was personally a big fan of hers.

*“Republican messaging attacking Pelosi appeared to be more effective than Democratic messaging against Trump. That’s a problem going forward, and it’s going to be a challenge in House races particularly.”*

"I think *the problem is we have not come up with an agenda *and then we need a strategy to communicate it," Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., said.

*"We can't just be against something."*

On Wednesday, some Democratic members of Congress publicly voiced concerns about Pelosi, raising the specter of a leadership challenge.

*“I think you’d have to be an idiot to think we could win the House with Pelosi at the top,” *Rep. Filemon Vela, a Texas Democrat, told Politico.

*“Nancy Pelosi is not the only reason that Ossoff lost, but she certainly is one of the reasons.”*

Representative Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico,* the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee*, reportedly met Wednesday morning with a group of lawmakers who have been *conferring about economic messaging,* according to several people present who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Mr. Luján told the group that his committee* would examine the Georgia results for lessons, but he urged the lawmakers to portray the race in positive terms in their public comments*, stressing that Democrats have consistently exceeded their historical performance in a series of special elections fought in solidly Republican territory.

It was in the meeting with Mr. Luján that *Mr. Cárdenas, a member of the Democratic leadership, brought up Ms. Pelosi’s role in the Georgia race, calling it “the elephant in the room.” *

Ms. Pelosi was not present.

On the front page of liberal heartland Silicon Valley's paper, The Mercury News of San Jose...

"*Some of the toughest ads against the 30-year-old [Georgia Dem candidate Jon] Ossoff were those tying him to Pelosi,* whose approval ratings are underwater outside California."

Furthermore, as NYTimes reports, in a possible omen, *the first Democratic candidate to announce his campaign after the Georgia defeat immediately vowed not to support Ms. Pelosi for leader.*

Joe Cunningham, a South Carolina lawyer challenging Representative Mark Sanford, *said Democrats needed “new leadership now.”*

Even Democrats who are not openly antagonistic toward Ms. Pelosi acknowledged that a decade of Republican attacks had taken a toll: *“It’s pretty difficult to undo the demonization of anyone,”* said Representative Bill Pascrell Jr. of New Jersey.

So with all that said, we are left with one question, as The Economic Collapse blog's Michael Snyder asks, *are the 'toxic' Democrats destine to become a permanent minority party?*

*It has become exceedingly clear that the Democratic Party is in deep trouble.*  Close to 55 million dollars was spent on the race in Georgia’s sixth congressional district, and that shattered all kinds of records.  Democrat Jon Ossoff was able to raise and spend six times as much money as Karen Handel and yet he still lost.  This was supposed to be the race that would show the American people that the Democrats could take back control of Congress in 2018, and so for the Democrats this was a bitter failure.  The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee actually injected almost 5 million dollars into the race themselves, and Planned Parenthood threw in another $700,000.  But after all of the time, effort and energy that was expended, Handel still won fairly comfortably.

*The Democrats are trying to spin this result as some sort of “moral victory”, *but as Dan Balz of the Washington Post has pointed out, there are “no moral victories in politics”…

There are no moral victories in politics. Republicans won on Tuesday in the most important special election this year. Democrats lost, as they have done in the other special elections in GOP-held seats this year.

For the national Democratic Party, the debate continues about developing a message that goes beyond attacking Trump, or assuming dissatisfaction with the president will be enough.

*It has been a very long time since there has been so much national attention on a single House race. * A number of high profile Hollywood celebrities became personally involved in Ossoff’s campaign, and they were absolutely devastated when he lost…

Celebrities who donated time and money to Ossoff’s campaign, including actresses Alyssa Milano and Rosie O’Donnell, used their social media accounts to react to the Democrat’s loss shortly after the election results were confirmed late Tuesday night.

Milano, who personally drove voters to the polls in April’s preliminary election and was actively campaigning for the Democrat for most of Election Day, tweeted simply: “Grouphug” and “Get in.”

Meanwhile, electronic music producer Moby and vocal Trump critic O’Donnell appeared to be frustrated by the results, with Moby questioning how Democratic “still can’t win” even with “buffoon” Donald Trump in the White House. O’Donnell tweeted: “DONALD TRUMP IS THE DARKNESS ITSELF.”

Where does the Democratic Party go from here?

Their anti-Trump message is not working, and their usual divide and conquer tactics are not working either.

At this point either the Democratic Party is going to have to reinvent itself, or they could be facing a long, painful string of election defeats for the foreseeable future.  To say that things have not been going well for the Democrats lately would be a major understatement.  I really like what Rush Limbaugh had to say about this on his radio show…

“You have no idea the degree to which the media and the Democratic Party are destroyed today. I’m talking about how they feel … which is complete and utter defeat, frustration and devastation,” he said on Wednesday, hours after Republican Karen Handel was a multiple percentage point winner over defeated Democrat Jon Ossoff.

“The dirty little secret is the media and the Democratic Party is turning off average Americans. They are not persuading, they are not convincing people Trump is a reprobate,” he continued. “They do not know how to beat Donald Trump. There are depressed and despondent.”

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why Jon Ossoff lost.

*All of the anger and violence that we have seen lately has greatly tainted the Democratic Party.*

*The Democrats have become the party of Kathy Griffin.*

*The Democrats have become the party of Antifa and mock Trump assassinations.*

*And the Democrats have become the party of James Hodgkinson.*

U.S. Representative Tim Ryan was right on the ball when he admitted that his *party’s brand has now become “toxic” in much of the nation…*

Representative Tim Ryan of Ohio, who tried to unseat Ms. Pelosi as House minority leader late last fall, said she remained a political millstone for Democrats. But Mr. Ryan said the Democratic brand had also become “toxic” in much of the country because voters saw Democrats as “not being able to connect with the issues they care about.”

*“Our brand is worse than Trump,”* he said.

*As I have discussed repeatedly, the left doesn’t have any positive vision for the future to offer the American people. * They cannot win in the marketplace of ideas, and so they use anger, frustration, intimidation and violence as weapons.  For quite a while the Democrats successfully used “the blame game” and divide and conquer tactics to win elections, but now the American people are seeing through the charade.

The more angry and violent the left becomes, the more the American people are going to turn against them.  The following comes from Daniel Greenfield…

*But Trump Derangement Syndrome is a symptom of a problem with the left that existed before he was born. The left is an angry movement. It is animated by an outraged self-righteousness whose moral superiority doubles as dehumanization. And its machinery of culture glamorizes its anger. The media dresses up the seething rage so that the left never has to look at its inner Hodgkinson in the mirror.*

The left is as angry as ever. Campus riots and assassinations of Republican politicians are nothing new. What is changing is that its opponents are beginning to match its anger.  The left still clings to the same anger it had when it was a theoretical movement with plans, but little impact on the country. The outrage at the left is no longer ideological. There are millions of people whose health care was destroyed by ObamaCare, whose First Amendment rights were taken away, whose land was seized, whose children were turned against them and whose livelihoods were destroyed.

Of course it is quite true that the Republican Party needs to be cleaned up as well.  Many establishment Republicans use labels such as “conservative” and “Pro-Life” to win elections, but then they end up government like Democrats.  And so many members of Congress in both parties spend far more time and energy raising money for their next elections than they do serving the American people.

*There is a reason why Congress only has a 17.6 percent approval rating at the moment.  Both major parties should take that as a sign that they need to clean up their acts, because the American people are sick and tired of the status quo.*

* * *

*Of course the denial runs deep in The Democratic Party* as a morning-after memo from the head of the House Democrats' campaign arm, DCCC Chair Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, tries to buck up the troops by declaring: *"THE HOUSE IS IN PLAY," partly because of "the nationwide collapse of support for President Trump."*

And Pelosi herself made the following incredible statements this morning...

· **PELOSI SAYS PROUD OF GA. CONGRESSIONAL RACE SHOWING*
· *PELOSI SAYS PROUD OF UNITY AMONG DEMOCRATS, AND HER LEADERSHIP
· *PELOSI SAYS MANY DISTRICTS ARE NOW OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEMOCRATS
· **PELOSI SAYS DEMOCRATS UNITED ON ISSUES*

It appears all that Democrats are united on is that Pelosi should go. Reported by Zero Hedge 46 minutes ago.

How Jackie Chan DC Racing and Jota Sport stunned at Le Mans

A British race preparation outfit and a team founded by a world-famous movie star joined forces to fight Porsche for victory at Le Mans

Porsche was on the ropes, Toyota was in disarray and with less than two hours remaining in the Le Mans 24 Hours on Sunday 18 June, the most surprising result in the race’s 94-year history looked to be tantalisingly possible.

Despite competing in the second-tier LMP2 category and giving away a significant performance advantage to the top LMP1 prototypes, the Jackie Chan DC Racing entry driven by Ho-Pin Tung, Oliver Jarvis and Thomas Laurent was leading the race.

Chasing the underdog was the number two Porsche 919 Hybrid. The other multi-million-pound LMP1 hybrids from Porsche and Toyota had already hit serious trouble, leaving the Oreca-Gibson – an off-the-peg chassis and engine combination costing around £500,000 – at the front.

True, the remaining Porsche was using its additional ability – including about 400bhp of extra power, better fuel economy that enabled it to go longer between pitstops and more effective aerodynamics – to take about 10sec per lap out of the petrol-only Oreca’s lead with each passing lap.

But catching the Oreca before the end of the race was going to be a close-run thing: even the German giant’s own race strategists were extrapolating that their car might only be on the tail of the leader on the race’s final lap. This, it seemed to the hundreds of thousands watching on television and at trackside, was going to be a nail-biting finish.

Inside the Jackie Chan DC Racing pit garage, however, a different side of the story was brewing. Sam Hignett, team principal and director of JOTA Sport, the Kent-based preparation team that runs the Chinese Jackie Chan DC Racing entry, was keeping everyone focused on the main objective: victory in the LMP2 category.

Early in the Oreca’s history-making spell in the lead, Hignett and the JOTA Sport squad knew what the world, and Porsche, did not: the leading car would need a time-consuming rear bodywork change during its next visit to the pits for fuel and tyres. The rear lights had failed and if an eagle-eyed Le Mans official spied the problem, the team could be penalised, something that would jeopardise the precious lead over LMP2 rivals.

It was deemed wise to remedy the issue at a routine stop, even if the extra 30-40sec effectively sacrificed any hope of outright victory.

“We were aware that Porsche was going to get ahead during that next hour, but it was quite fun listening to everybody trying to work out when they were going to pass us,” says Hignett. “The big boss of Toyota came up to me after the race and said one of the greatest moments was seeing the Porsche having to really hustle to try to catch us, because Porsche didn’t know about our longer scheduled pitstop, so they really had to get on with it. We were the only people who knew about the longer stop at that stage. It was a great fantasy for a moment, but the reality was otherwise.”

Earlier that morning, Hignett had experienced a “feeling of disbelief” when Porsche’s number one car – which had a 13-lap lead – ground to a halt with less than four hours remaining. With the number two 919 Hybrid still recovering from serious delays suffered earlier in the race and Toyota’s three LMP1 cars already out of contention, the Jackie Chan DC Racing car was best placed to take over the lead.

“I was sitting with our engineers watching the screens at the time and when we saw the Porsche slowing, it didn’t really dawn on us what that meant,” he says. “But when Andre Lotterer got out of the 919 Hybrid, I remember just looking at the engineers. We didn’t need to say anything. It was very funny – nobody talked about it, but we all knew. It was a good moment.

“We had a chat over the radio involving all the team and said to the guys ‘Where we are in the race is amazing, but our focus has to remain on winning LMP2’. With leading the race, we became the most popular team in the pitlane, which is something that we have never experienced before.”

As a long-time LMP2 entrant, JOTA Sport is used to operating away from the fierce glare of publicity that’s endured by the big factory LMP1 teams. Suddenly, though, Jackie Chan DC Racing was the toast of the pitlane, and that brought with it unfamiliar pressure.

“I now understand the difficulties that Porsche, Toyota and those guys have with the press,” says Hignett. “We were swamped with people. There was an extraordinary amount of pressure on the crew when they had TV crews around them all of a sudden.

“Full credit to the mechanics and the engineers: they took it in their stride, even though they were shattered by that point of the race. We hadn’t had the best run-in to the race, so the guys had had to work through the night on Friday as well, so the last time some of the crew had seen their beds was Thursday. It was really tough.”

Knowing about the impending bodywork change during the next pitstop released some of that pressure on Jota Sport, and when the Porsche 919 Hybrid swept past the Oreca-Gibson and into the lead with one hour to go, an air of relative normality returned and the team knuckled down to bring home the LMP2 spoils – and a remarkable second place overall.

It wasn’t as if the number 38 car was enjoying a completely trouble-free run, either. The three drivers had been nursing a dragging clutch since the eighth hour. Allied to this, they had lost time with a starting issue (traced to a faulty aircon unit draining the battery) in the early stages of the race and a further delay had occurred when Laurent went off at Indianapolis Corner on Saturday, damaging the Oreca’s front bodywork.

Besides all that, this was a race where many had predicted that the second-tier prototypes would struggle. This was the first Le Mans 24 Hours for the latest breed of LMP2s, all powered by the 4.2-litre V8 Gibson engine. None of the competitors in the 25-strong class at Le Mans had used their new cars in anger for longer than six hours.

“Prior to the race, everybody was having a bet on how few LMP2s would finish,” says Hignett. “Some expected less than half of them cars to make it. It wasn’t the case at all, and most of those that didn’t make it were taken out in accidents. This is a new generation of LMP2 cars and for us to dominate Le Mans like that is a great testament to our team’s technical staff and everything they’ve done.”

Jota was confident that the pace of its two cars would stand it in good stead during the race, but for the number 38 entry to spend such little time in the pits – and no time at all having more significant repairs in the garage – was a brilliant performance that for Hignett feels almost as good as a victory.

“LMP2 is like a mid-grid Formula 1 championship in terms of driver ability, so there is very little in it, but if we can achieve the minimum pitstop time and have no cars visit the garage during the race – that’s really something for us to be proud of,” he says.

“We were confident we would be on the pace. There were three or four other cars on the grid that were as good as us on pace sometimes, but as an average – and Le Mans is all about averages - across our three drivers, we were confident that we had most of our LMP2 rivals covered off. It really was just a question of reliability and then, as always at Le Mans, you need a huge dose of luck with accidents and the other things that can befall you.”

Luck may have played its part, but it would be uncharitable to say that was the only factor at play. Everyone involved with Jackie Chan DC Racing hit their marks during the race.

Jota has a history of performing strongly at Le Mans, having finished fifth overall in 2014, but last Sunday’s achievement is likely to remain stamped in the record books for some time. It marked the first time a car from the second-tier LMP2 class has led the famous race, and the first time a car shod with Dunlop tyres had led for 20 years. Tung became the first Chinese competitor to stand on the Le Mans podium, and Jackie Chan DC Racing was the first Chinese entrant to do likewise.

The second entry, driven by team co-founder David Cheng, Tristan Gommendy and Alex Brundle, finished fourth on the road and third in the LMP2 category. However, the car in second place, the number 13 Rebellion entry, was subsequently disqualified for a technical infringement, leaving the Jackie Chan DC Racing cars second and third overall, and first and second in LMP2.

It’s a remarkable achievement for the team co-founded by Hollywood action hero Chan, not least because it only joined forces with Jota Sport at the start of this season.

For Hignett and Jota Sport, there has been no time to bask in the Le Mans result. The Le Mans trophies have been airfreighted to China for a two-week promotional tour also involving some of the drivers. The day after Le Mans, his engineering team sent him an email requesting permission to do some additional testing to bolster its LMP2 push in the World Endurance Championship.

“We took some valuable lessons away from Le Mans. We’re on top of our game in LMP2 but we need to do our very best to get that championship trophy too,” he says. Reported by Autocar 38 minutes ago.

The biggest hit song the year you were born

The biggest hit song the year you were born Whenever you were born, there was a song you couldn't get away from.

We don't think about it much, but the music playing around us as we grow up is ingrained with us for life. Whether it's Elvis Presley's '50s hits, baby-boomer classics like The Beatles' "Hey Jude," or George Michael in the '80s, for their respective generations, and usually more, they'll always be around.

While standards and novelty songs were common reaching back to radio's early peak, rock and then hip-hop slowly encroached, to the point that they're now basically in everything we hear, even if not directly. Though a throwback crooner like Pharrell's "Happy" can still light up the charts.

Billboard has been tracking the top song of each year in its annual charts since 1946. Business Insider compiled each hit below so you can see, and hear, what was the soundtrack of your birth year.

PM greets nation on Eid, says diversity is India's strength

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today extended Eid-ul-Fitr greetings to all and said inspiration should be drawn from such pious festivals to spread happiness and to take the nation forward.

He emphasised that Indias diversity is its speciality as well as its strength.

"The holy month of Ramzan was celebrated with devotion. Now it is time for Eid. On the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, my best wishes to all," Modi said in his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat.

Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the culmination of the fasting month of Ramzan, will be celebrated tomorrow.

"Ramzan is a month of holy donations, to spread happiness... Come, let us all together take inspiration from such pious festivals to keep spreading the treasure of happiness and keep taking the nation forward," he added.

While talking about the diversity, the prime minister also referred to the Lord Jagannath Yatra taken out today in the country as well as some parts of the world with devotion and religious fervour.

"I extend greetings to the countrymen on the occasion of Jagannath yatra," he said during the 30-minute programme.

"The countrys poor people are connected to Lord Jagannath. Those who have studied Baba Sahab Ambedkar would have seen that he used to shower praise on Lord Jagannath temple and its traditions because it involved social justice and social harmony," Modi said.

In this context, he referred to the word "juggernaut" and said it means "such a chariot which cannot be stopped by anyone."

While mentioning about Ramzan, the prime minister highlighted an "inspiring" gesture of the people of Muslim- dominated Mubarakpur village in Bijnaur district of Uttar Pradesh.

He said during the Ramzan, the people of the village with a population of about 3,500 families, mostly Muslims, decided to collectively construct a toilet.

To extend help in this endeavour, the government provided about Rs 17 lakh, Modi said.

"But you will be happy to know that all the Muslim brothers and sisters, on the occasion of Ramzan, returned the amount of about Rs 17 to the government saying they would construct their toilet with their own money and labour," the prime minister said.

He said the villagers told the government to spend the amount on providing other facilities in the village.

Congratulating the villagers of Mubarakpur for this, Modi said while their gesture was inspiring, the bigger element was that village was made open defecation free (ODF).

He said three states -- Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh and Kerala -- had already been declared ODF and recently Uttarakhand and Haryana had also joined these states.

"I thank the governments and public of these five states for accomplishing this task," Modi said.

The prime minister, who is vigorously pushing the Swacch Bharat campaign, said accomplishment of the programme will need a sustained and a prolonged effort.

"Such bad habits (of open defecation) have become a part of our lives. To get rid of these (bad habits), we will have to persevere. We will have to draw everybodys attention. Positive and inspiring stories will have to be told again and again," he said.

At the same time, he expressed happiness that cleanliness is now no longer a government programme but has become a mass movement. He said this strengthens the governments resolve.

In this context, he mentioned a recent case in Vijaynagram district of Andhra Pradesh, where the people and the administration took a resolve of constructing 10,000 home toilets in 71 villages within 100 hours non-stop.

They accomplished the task within the time period and 71 villages became ODF, he said about the initiative launched at 6 am on March 10.

He hailed the endeavour, saying it was very inspiring.

During the programme, the prime minister also referred to a letter written by a housewife in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu.

In the letter, she had written that she was selling goods through the Government E-Marketplace, an online portal and even the Prime Ministers Office had bought two items from her through it.

"This is empowerment," the prime minister underlined, highlighting how entrepreneurial skills can be utilised in a transparent manner by anyone in the country.

Modi also appreciated the manner in which the International Day of Yoga was celebrated across the world recently.

Along with it, he referred to the recent successful launches of satellites by the ISRO.

"This shows that while our feet are on the ground, our dreams are flying high," the prime minister remarked.

He also said that the Mars Mission, which had been launched on June 19 last year for a six-month period, had completed one year and was still functioning well.

He also sought to give a push to the concept of presenting books or khadi items as gifts instead of bouquets.

Modi also asked parents to encourage their children to play more sports as he praised badminton player K Srikanth for winning the Indonesia Open recently.

He said everyone should aspire for medals in the next Olympic Games. Reported by Deccan Herald 6 hours ago.

Country facing undeclared emergency under BJP rule: Congress

Hitting back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remark on the Emergency, the Congress today said he should remember the country is facing an "undeclared Emergency" under the BJP rule.

It, however, acknowledged that the Emergency, imposed on this day in 1975, "was a mistake" and said lessons have been learned.

"The prime minister talks of remembering the Emergency. Yes, we remember the Emergency. But we also ask him to remember we are facing an undeclared Emergency," All India Congress Committee (AICC) spokesperson Tom Vadakkan alleged.

History may repeat itself if the prime minister failed to learn from the past, he warned.

"We accept the Emergency was a mistake. We have learned from it. But while reminding us of those mistakes, please learn to correct yourself. If you do not learn from history, you are bound to repeat it. The country is witnessing just that," he said.

The Congress leader referred to the CBI raids at the residence of NDTV founder Prannoy Roy to drive his point home that there is an "undeclared Emergency" under the BJP rule, with the media being muzzled.

"The Group of Ministers has been reduced to "just a name" under the Modi rule. It is not the Union Cabinet but the Prime Ministers Office which takes the decisions," Vadakkan claimed.

"No meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security took place. No explanation has been given till date on the amount of money collected through demonetization," he said.

The Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity should issue a white paper on those receiving its advertisements and to what extent corporate houses are involved in the backroom management of the media.

The Congress leader also expressed concern "over a spurt in the number of lynching incidents and harassment by anti- Romeo squads (in Uttar Pradesh)".

The situation at present is "no match to a declared Emergency", he said.

In his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, Modi today remembered the Emergency, saying "such a black night" cannot be forgotten, and underlined the need for eternal vigilance to preserve democracy.

He recalled that democracy-lovers had fought a big battle against the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and said the pro-democracy "heritage" needs to be strengthened.

Modi said it was essential to remember the incidents which have caused harm to democracy and move ahead towards the positives of democracy. Reported by Deccan Herald 5 hours ago.
