Strong Hearts Beat Weak Minds: Multi-Racial Cast Performs Controversial Audio Book-Audio Drama for Audible

"Black Hearts White Minds" by Mitch Margo, Civil Rights tale, debuts as new Audible hybrid audio book-audio drama performed by multi-racial cast.

LOS ANGELES (PRWEB) October 09, 2018

"Black Hearts White Minds" has been striking a nerve in both black and white communities since its publication earlier this year. Honouring the core of the story, a talented cast of eight now performs the thirty characters, bringing it vividly to life as an audio book that pushes into the audio drama category.

Already the novel, published in January, has won three book awards. Penned by debut author Mitch Margo, a speaker and St. Louis trial lawyer, the rivetting story has been performed by an outstanding multi-racial cast and produced by an award-winning production team. The new release is making its debut on Audible, the premiere audio download service.

“I’m thrilled with the cast, the production value, and the entire sense of my story lifting off the page into an exciting performance,” Margo commented. “The terror and injustice and ignorance in the novel is met by the courage of the characters, and this comes through dynamically in the new audio. This is not just an audio book. It feels like you’re listening to a fast-paced radio drama.”

Author Mitch Margo researched the early 1960s in depth for seven years before writing Black Hearts White Minds. “I never imagined that the book would be so relevant today. Prejudice has again reared its ugly head, and so has angry retaliation,” said Margo. “But so have meaningful dialogues and significant breakthroughs. I’m gratified my book is now part of the national conversation about these vital issues.”

Jo Lena Johnson, founder of Mission Possible Press, also in St. Louis, found the book to be so important that she made room for it in her busy publishing schedule.
“As a black woman, I was skeptical that a white man could tell a story of prejudice in America authentically. But when I read the manuscript, I realized it had a sense of justice, of equality, and of hope. That message is important. I felt my perspective and expertise could help bring this story to readers.”

“Jo Lena’s leadership and commitment helped to make this book possible,” Margo confirmed. “Perhaps in forging an author-publisher partnership, we’re modelling some of the ideas in the book.”

The next step in the publishing process was to plan for an audio book, and both Johnson and Margo knew it would have to be produced by someone with both expertise and sensitivity. The team tapped veteran audio producer Mara Purl, who has produced award-winning radio dramas, audio dramas and audio books.

“I knew the only way to present this book was to let the characters tell the story in their own voices,” Purl said. “It turns out our decision to voice the book with several performers is part of a cutting-edge trend. The new James Patterson-Bill Clinton audio book has six performers; we have eight, and we added sound effects to the climactic scene, taking the project into a new ‘hybrid’ realm of audio production.”

The audio, is available in downloadable form from Audible.com and on physical CDs through the author’s website.

In the story, the year is 1964 and Carl Gordon is an ill-prepared New York Assistant U.S. Attorney who has lied his way into a transfer to Stockville, Alabama, where he is supposed to monitor and enforce the Civil Rights Act. He has no idea what he is getting himself, and his 12-year-old son, into in the segregated South.

In a matter of days, the Ku Klux Klan takes aim at him, the outside agitator. Carl has agreed to represent Oleatha Geary, a black family matriarch who has inherited a mansion in an all-white, race-restricted neighborhood. Carl and Oleatha are engulfed in litigation that turns deadly. Meanwhile Oleatha’s daughter Lenore, and Carl, find themselves in a budding romance that’s opposed by everyone, white and black.

The Cast Includes (in alphabetical order)

David Benjamin Bliss, a busy Audible narrator known for The Redemption Trilogy and many other titles. William Berkuta, veteran audio engineer and background audio performer, Bridget Sullivan, and Jo Lena Johnson. Lewis Davis and international touring singer S. Omar Marshall play brothers, and their mother Oleatha, the matriarch of the story around whom much of the plot revolves, is played by Shellie Gaines. Kevin Whittington plays the grandson, who concludes the story as the inheritor of its legacy.

Handling lead roles are three more actors. Mara Purl, who narrates the book, plays the female protagonist and other roles, is an Audible narrator and has voiced multiple fiction and non-fiction audios. She co-starred in her BBC Radio drama Milford-Haven USA,.is a well-known voice in national commercials, and on TV she is best known as Darla Cook in Days of Our Lives. On stage she’s known for starring roles in Sea Marks, Mary Shelley In Her Own Words, and Becoming Julia Morgan. Previous awards for her narration performances include a Benjamin Franklin Audio Award and a USA Book News Audio Award.

Rashid Silvera voiced Pastor Williams, the spiritual center of the story, and Benny Elsberry, an icon of success who becomes the victim of horrific racism. “The story spoke to my soul,” remarked Silvera, a veteran performer, and an educator with an M.T.S. degree from Harvard Divinity School and an Ed.M. degree from Harvard Graduate School of Education, who has taught at several schools, with Scarsdale High School in Scarsdale, New York, having been his teaching career home since 1981. But Rashid is also a renowned model who became the fourth black male model to appear on the cover of GQ magazine, also appearing on the covers of Essence magazine and CODE magazine, and he was the first African American male to model for a Polo Ralph Lauren advertisement campaign.

David Rosenblatt, who voiced protagonist Carl Gordon, was trained as a Gestalt Therapist and brought this in-the-moment passion to bear as the main character Carl Gordon. In addition to audiobooks, David has done stage work, film work, music recordings, and creative design. He plays two leading characters on stage in ongoing productions of Becoming Julia Morgan.

Engineer Bill Berkuta edited and mastered the audio project at Afterhours Recording Company in Los Angeles. Performers recorded both at Afterhours Recording in L.A., and at Buttons New York in New York City, with engineers Jeremy Goldsmith, Chi Lee, and Phil Prevete.

Nick Zelinger of NZ Graphics, the cover designer for both the book and the audio, has been a book designer for 30 years. He and his clients have won more than 100 national and international book awards.

Press & Endorsements:

“Black Hearts White Minds dives deep into the Civil Rights movement in the American South at a crucial time: 1964. But Mitch Margo sets his first novel in one Alabama town, allowing him to explore the era on a distinctly human scale through ordinary people and not so ordinary events. The result is a book that feels personal, rather than monumental. Margo, a seasoned lawyer who makes the law and lawyering an important but not overriding element of his story, has a knack for dramatic structure and a sharp eye for contrasting, engaging personalities. And his plot twists manage to be simultaneously startling and entirely credible, no mean feat.”
-Eric Mink, Writer, The Huffington Post

“The early sixties are often thought of as a time of lost innocence. Margo reminds us that the era was anything but innocent in the American south. His novel rings with authenticity and his characters’ struggles in the fictional town of Stockville, Alabama foretell the problems we still face today. Stockville is not really so far from Ferguson.”
– Bill McClellan, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“While a work of fiction, Black Hearts White Minds transports readers to a time and place in American history, 1964 small-town Alabama, when the Civil Rights movement was slowly gaining traction, and segregationists, including the Ku Klux Klan, would stop at nothing to trounce the efforts of blacks and whites fighting for justice. Margo has crafted a narrative that is equal parts engrossing, heartbreaking and hopeful, populated with richly drawn, compelling characters, and an overarching essence that captures the enduring nature of the human spirit, no matter the obstacles.”
-Ellen Futterman, Editor, St. Louis Jewish Light

“As I read Black Hearts White Minds, I was reminded by turns of Harper Lee, Willie Morris, and John Grisham. Like Grisham, Mitch Margo is an attorney; like Morris, he’s a former journalist, and like Lee, his writing is evocative with a moral center straight and true. With our new president publicly insulting Civil Rights icon John Lewis and the new administration looking to reverse 50 years of progress, this Civil Rights era page-turner is a must read.”

Former Daily Features Editor, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Devices from Ericsson, Nokia, Sercomm, and Ruckus Networks First in Ecosystem to Support Use of 3.5 GHz Band

SUNNYVALE, Calif. and WASHINGTON, Oct. 09, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, the CBRS Alliance and the Wireless Innovation Forum (WInnForum), jointly commended the industry-leading businesses that introduced the first set of Citizens Broadband Radio Service Devices (CBSDs) certified by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Ericsson, Nokia, Sercomm, and Ruckus Networks, an ARRIS company, achieved certification for the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) band, representing momentum for a growing ecosystem of mobile operators, cable operators, managed service providers, private enterprises and more that see incredible value in utilizing shared spectrum for wireless connectivity. To receive FCC certification, devices were tested against 47 CFR Part 96. Part of this testing requires demonstrating that a CBSD correctly communicates with a Spectrum Access System (SAS). The devices certified met this requirement by showing conformance with the WInnForum SAS to CBSD Interface Specification (WINNF-TS-0016) through successful testing against the WInnForum CBSD Test Specification (WINNF-TS-0122) at a WInnForum CBRS Approved Test Lab. In addition to FCC certification, these devices are also the first to receive OnGo Certification from the CBRS Alliance.

“The Wireless Innovation Forum is excited to congratulate these members on receiving their FCC equipment authorizations,” said Lee Pucker, CEO of the Wireless Innovation Forum. “This major milestone in the commercialization of the CBRS band represents the first of what we believe will be many more certifications announced over the next few months as the industry moves towards Initial Commercial Deployment.”

“FCC authorization forms the foundation for OnGo Certification, so we are extremely pleased to see the first products receiving their Part 96 grants,” said Alan Ewing, Executive Director, CBRS Alliance. “We wish to thank the FCC and WInnForum for their hard work and dedication in helping reach this important milestone and enabling CBRS Alliance to initialize the OnGo Certification Program.”

“Securing the FCC certification for Ericsson’s CBRS portfolio is another important step in the deployment of CBRS networks. CBRS will allow our customers to serve many use cases, including Mobile Offload, Fixed Wireless Access, Private LTE, Industrial IoT, and MVNO Offload," said Paul Challoner, VP of Network Product Solutions, Ericsson.

“Nokia is proud to be one of the first to complete the FCC certification of our CBRS product lines. Nokia has been one of the driving forces behind the band and is commercializing the product line in readiness for mass deployment,” said Chris Stark, Head of Business Development, North America, Nokia and Chairman, CBRS Alliance. “We see immense value in leveraging OnGo technology for private LTE and neutral host environments and are seeing growing interest across industry sectors, including public venues, smart cities, enterprises, healthcare and more.”

“FCC certification of our CBSD is the end result of Sercomm’s years of work in various labs and field trials, and we are very excited to have this achievement,” said Ben Lin, Executive VP and CTO, Sercomm. “We hope that our efforts here advance the CBRS community one step closer to commercial readiness, and usher a new era of innovative networking and connectivity.”

“Ruckus Networks believes this innovation band will open up compelling new use cases by enabling LTE technology to be deployed and operated in a cost effective and scalable manner,” said Mehmet Yavuz, CTO of Ruckus Networks, an ARRIS Company. “As one of the first companies to achieve FCC & OnGo certification for 3.5 GHz indoor and outdoor access points, we have been seeing extraordinary results in more than 20 OnGo trials across different verticals that are ready for initial commercial deployment and range from connectivity to automation use cases.”

5 High-Culture Low-Cost Beach Towns to Retire In—Internationalliving.com

Today’s beach-loving retirees are seeking more than just sun and sand, but a sophisticated lifestyle by the sea, offering fine dining, theater, and art in abundance. A new report from the editors at Internationalliving.com identifies five arts-rich, great-value beach towns around the world—in Mexico, France, Uruguay, Spain, and Malaysia.

BALTIMORE (PRWEB) October 09, 2018

“Living in a beach town and enjoying the sun and sand—that can go hand-in-hand with the benefits of sophisticated big-city living. Look at Miami or at Los Angeles, for instance. But those U.S. cities are expensive,” says Jennifer Stevens, Executive Editor, International Living.

“By contrast, retirees can enjoy all the benefits of fine-dining, theater, and art in abundance in five great-value coastal cities we’ve identified abroad. All of them offer high-quality, sophisticated living at a relatively low price. And you can go to the beach, too.”

Our top picks for high-culture, low-cost beach towns for retirement span the globe, from Mexico and France to Uruguay, Spain, and Malaysia.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Set on Mexico’s central Pacific coast, Puerto Vallarta is a world-class and world-famous vacation destination, attracting travelers from around the world, as well as a large contingent of retirees.

Rich in cultural history, the town is dotted with museums and theaters. The heart of Puerto Vallarta is the Zona Romantica, also known as Old Town. It’s a pedestrian-friendly zone of narrow streets and historic buildings mixed in with modern construction. Here you can find shops, bakeries, cafes, restaurants, condo buildings, and more within a stone’s throw of the water. The outskirts of the town are slickly modern, featuring large shopping malls, marinas, and spacious housing developments.

With excellent medical care, and a large international airport offering plenty of direct flights from multiple cities in Canada and the U.S., the bustling seaside town is on top of many retirees’ lists.

Despite its popularity as a tourist destination, Puerto Vallarta offers an affordable cost of living compared to most cities in the U.S. or Canada. A typical retired couple should budget under $3,000 for a month’s expenses—all in.

However, expats like Bobby Blanchard and Nan Lippard find they can live on much less.

“We sold everything and came down on the bus with two suitcases,” says Nan, 56. “There’s a ‘humanness’ that is still here that is missing from the U.S. It’s like a dream. You feel renewed when you get down here.”

They rent a one-bedroom condo for $472 a month, which includes maid service and bottled water. There are also two swimming pools in their community.

“We’re proof you can live in Mexico for $1,000 a month for two people, including rent, food, utilities, gas for the car…although there’s not a lot for extras,” says Bobby, 57. “The thing I like best is that we don’t have to worry about a house or car payment. We’re debt-free. If it costs you your peace, it’s too expensive. There’s a huge freedom in not having debt. If we want, we can get the suite when we go on a cruise.”

Toulon, France

The city of Toulon, on France’s Mediterranean coast, oozes Côte d'Azur class. Unlike its more expensive neighbors along the coast—Saint Tropez, Cannes, Bandol, and Cassis—tourism is one of Toulon’s secondary industries, so the city stays “open for business” all year long.

Toulon is made of South of France romance—whether savoring local cuisine by the sea, or strolling cobbled streets at dusk, this is a place that always seduces the senses.

The center of town is abuzz with café-goers, and diners enjoy lunchtime under the famous French Riviera sunshine. The city has a thriving arts scene with many concerts and festivals held along the beach.

“Eight years ago, my husband, Nicolas and I, made our home in Toulon,” says Tuula Rampont. “I immediately fell in love with the place. The Mediterranean lifestyle has to be one of the best in the world.

“Given the slower pace of life in France, and the preference given to leisure time over work, my life in Provence feels much less stressful than when I lived in the U.S.

“We live with the seasons, eat what’s fresh and readily available, and have plenty of time for leisure. And since Toulon sits directly on the sea, this means lazy afternoons at the beach, long port-side lunches, and weekend trips to any one of the charming Provençal towns that line the coast.”

Despite living so near to the Mediterranean, it doesn’t come with a hefty price tag.

“I could easily afford to rent a comfortable one-bedroom for $650 in the center of Toulon,” she says. “And if you increase your budget a bit—or rent as a couple—things get really interesting. When we first arrived, we rented a two-bedroom apartment, with a sea view, and just a two-minute walk from the beach for $1,090.”

Barcelona, Spain.

Barcelona, Spain’s second city, is an organized, efficient, friendly, and receptive city that spills over with music, theater, and nightlife. It’s a city alive with history and art with countless museums and concert events.

Spanish architect, Antoni Gaudí i Cornet, is the best-known practitioner of Catalan Modernism. Most of Gaudí’s works are located in Barcelona, including his main work, the church of the Sagrada Família.

Despite being home to more than 1.6 million people, Barcelona has a walkable center, and it’s easy to get almost anywhere by foot or public transport—many residents choose to live car-free.

Barcelona is on about the same latitude as New York City and Chicago but enjoys a much milder climate, thanks to the Mediterranean. In January, the coldest month, temperatures range from 54 F to 61 F during the day.

Another great part of Barcelona’s appeal is its convenience. El Prat airport has numerous direct flights to the U.S., Canada, Latin America, and, of course, to many European cities—making it a great base for exploring. And, this city can be much more affordable than retirees might expect.

“When my husband Kurt and I step out the door of our 1882 modernista (Catalan art nouveau) building, we enter a grand world of art and green space blessed by a warm, Mediterranean climate and surrounded by incredible landscapes, from beaches to mountains,” says Linda Fernandez.

“You might think the culture and convenience we enjoy here comes at a premium. But not so. We consider our living expenses to be minimal. Since we own our own apartment, our regularly occurring expenses—minus groceries and entertainment—average about $860 a month.

“Back in Texas, we were used to property taxes consuming a huge portion of our monthly paycheck; in Barcelona, property taxes are minuscule, averaging around $66 a month.”

Montevideo, Uruguay

Most expats are attracted to Uruguay for its tranquilo (calm) lifestyle—a healthy, stress-free approach to living. And in the capital, Montevideo, it’s evident almost everywhere. This is a place where the traditional and the modern weave together.

Montevideo is a coastal city on the Rio de la Plata, with a population of 1.4 million. It is one of the most diverse and sophisticated cities in South America. From its Old World theaters and opera houses, to its jazz festivals and exquisite restaurants, Montevideo looks and feels like modern Europe.

The city has many large parks, plazas, tree-lined streets, sandy beaches, and wide avenues. The “rambla”—the promenade that runs the full length of Montevideo’s seven-mile coastline—provides a long-paved strip ideal for walking, running, and bicycling.

Montevideo has a prosperous economy, but people still take time for one another. It has gleaming new shopping malls, but it is also teeming with small family-owned shops. It’s a balanced environment.

Two people can live in Montevideo on $3,200 a month, renting a one-bedroom, furnished apartment in Pocitos, the most popular expat neighborhood in the city.

George Town, Penang, Malaysia

Penang, a small tropical island off the west coast of peninsular Malaysia, is a remarkable place. No bigger than Manhattan, it’s a spot that has it all—arts and culture, history and nature, beach and jungle.

A former outpost of the British empire, Penang’s English-speaking populace makes it easy for North American retirees to fit in. Not only are people friendly and helpful but expats can comfortably speak to them in English.

Chinese, Indian, Malay, and other influences over the centuries have contributed to Penang’s vibrant architecture and delectable cuisine. As a result, most people are bi-lingual or poly-lingual. It also means tolerance and “live and let live” is the default attitude.

Known as a foodie haven, Penang’s largest city, George Town, is home to eclectic architecture, a vibrant art scene, and what many claim is the best street food in the world.

The city offers luxurious living at bargain prices—making it possible to “trade up.” Since moving to Penang from Portland, Oregon, Ed and Sally Wilkerson enjoy a 1,300-square-foot apartment with sea and harbor views, and a balcony that can easily hold 30 people.

“We entertain quite a bit,” Sally says. “This balcony and the apartment are made for entertaining, and we love having friends over. We get quite a few visitors from the States, and although people thought we were crazy when we left, they don’t when they visit.”

Their apartment comes with 24-hour security, a rooftop swimming pool, a state-of-the-art gym, and tennis courts. All for $1,000 a month.

On a budget of between $1,500 and $2,500 a month, a couple could live well here, everything included.

The family of the late actors and activists Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee are proud to announce the availability of the 2018/2019 Ossie Davis Legacy Award Scholarship

WASHINGTON (PRWEB) October 09, 2018

The family of the late actors and activists Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee are proud to announce the availability of the 2018/2019 Ossie Davis Legacy Award Scholarship. The scholarship has been administered by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) since its inception in 2007. This year’s recipient will be named the Centennial Scholar in honor of Mr. Davis’ 100th birthday. The $10,000 merit-based scholarship will be awarded to a deserving African American student currently enrolled at a select UNCF-member institution, studying African American Studies, Communications, Education, Fine Arts, Humanities, Performing Arts, Political Sciences, Theater Arts, Drama or Visual Arts. The application is now available online at http://www.UNCF.org/OssieDavis and http://www.ossieandruby.com

Ossie Davis was a well-read thinker, communicator, humorist and humanist who influenced society and cared deeply about the world, the people, and his family. His pivotal contributions to the civil rights movement and his focus on the transformation of lives was unwavering and should never be forgotten. Whether on a Broadway stage, the silver screen or lending his voice to political rallies, Davis was a feverish humanitarian who was committed to effect change. He wholeheartedly believed that “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.”® The heart of the Ossie Davis Legacy Award is to ease financial barriers for that African American student who is on his or her path to higher learning.

“Now more than ever, it is imperative that young people of color arm themselves with the necessary tools to confront and combat many of the same social injustices and biases faced by our parents. And we are humbled by the generous contributions to the Ossie Davis Endowment that makes this scholarship possible,” says a statement issued by the Dee-Davis children (Nora Davis Day, Guy Davis, Dr. Hasna Muhammad).

“We are honored to carry forward the legacy of two pioneering entertainers and activists who made their marks not only through their work on screen, on stage and in music, but through the lasting imprint of the civil rights movement,” said UNCF CEO and President Dr. Michael L. Lomax. “This named UNCF scholarship carries on the work Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee charged ahead with throughout their lives.”

Notably, there are two past recipients of award that the Dee-Davis family and UNCF are extremely proud of—Ms. Deidra Shores and Ms. Karechia Wallace-Warthon. Deidra graduated from Clark Atlanta University, majoring in Mass Media Arts and minoring in Theater with a concentration in Radio, Television and Broadcast Journalism; and Karechia, one of the top 10 graduates of Spelman College (2018), is currently a teacher with Teach for America and will pursue her juris-doctorate degree at Georgetown Law in the fall of 2019.

He further added, “To perform these timing measurements, one can setup MAPS™ TM-ATM (*Timing Measurements in Air Traffic Management*) tools at appropriate strategic interfaces. GL’s MAPS™ TM-ATM is a custom suite of test tools, designed to accurately measure various types of delay occurrence in signalling and voice transmission. It includes all necessary hardware and software to identify, capture, timestamp, and correlate events at Analog, TDM and IP interfaces.”

As per the industry standards, the following network delay measurements are of primary interest:

· Transmitter activation delay
· Aircraft call indication delay
· Ground transmission voice delay
· Transmitter activation and aircraft call indication loopback delay
· Ground reception voice delay
· Ground transmission and reception voice loopback delay
· Frequency key activation response time and more

*Tools used for Timing Measurement*

MAPS™ TM-ATM (Timing Measurements in Air Traffic Management) components can be broadly categorized into two sets based on the underlying hardware:

· *Packet Products - Packet Analyzer*, *Packetizer, Discrete Signal Logger, *and *Event Data Logger* - all these are based on the same GL’s PacketExpert™ Ethernet/IP tester; their functionalities differ through scripts that cater to different needs of test cycle
· *Audio Analyzer* - this is based on VQuad™ Dual UTA hardware; its main functionality is to simulate radio calls from CWP

All components of *TM-ATM *are controlled by a centralized component called *MAPS™ Administrator (TM-ATM Client)*. MAPS™ TM-ATM support a client server model, with components acting as servers, the MAPS™ Admin acts as a client and controls all components acting as servers, from a centralised location.

*MAPS™ Administrator (MA)* uses TCP/IP to send /receive commands controlling the following server applications:

· *Packet* *Analyzer - *Packet Analyzer (PA) extends Ethernet testing capabilities of PacketExpert™ 10GX for 10 Gbps and 1 Gbps networks. The hardware unit is a more compact and adds 12-port user-configurable TTL trigger option as an important enhancement.

Packet Analyzer in the network functions like a highly precise Ethernet tap, filtering packets of interest from a bidirectional Ethernet link without disturbing the traffic. It generates output TTL signal pulses for every filter match, which can be processed using an external device like Oscilloscope.

· *Audio Analyzer - *is a 4-wire audio device that can connect to a CWP and emulate a controller by activating PTT and transmitting audio. The analyzer can inject and record analog signals at CWP, Radio and VoIP gateway interfaces and generate TTL for different actions (PTT ON, PTT OFF, Send Audio, Detect Audio).
· *Packetizer or Discrete Signal Logger - *The Discrete Signal Logger monitors the TTL output from the Audio Analyzer and generates a corresponding IP packet indicating a certain event has occurred. The packets generated by the Discrete Signal Logger are named as discreet events and posted to the Event Data Logger.
· *Event Data Logger - *As seen in the picture above, the Event Data Logger is located at the central location and receives the event packets forwarded from the various Packetizers or the Packet Analyzer systems throughout the network. It timestamps each received packet, decodes the packet to extract information, and updates the Events to the MAPS™ Controller.

Dressed To Suppress: Clash Meets Metric Emily Haines on songwriting, retaining their independence, and seeking new challenges...

For *Emily Haines* the best part of a new* Metric* album is the weeks, days, and hours before its release. A time when fan speculation rules social media, and the band get to enjoy those fleeting moments of excitement, completely unaware of what might lie ahead.

Speaking to Clash on the phone during a lightning quick trip to London, we can’t help but ask if she still feels those butterflies, the palpable nerves that light up the path to a new album. “I actually do!” she exclaims. “And I feel like it’s compounded by a sense of astonishment that this could be such a fun and long ride. And I think everyone in the band feels that. We still really love each other… it’s weird!”

Of course, it shouldn’t really be weird at all. Formed almost exactly 20 years ago, Metric have always seemed like a happy creative marriage, the band’s fusion of pinpoint guitars and ultra-fashion electronics excelling across six studio albums.

The seventh - ‘Art Of Doubt’ - is the reason for our call, and it’s their first in three years. It’s the sound of a band willing to change – guitarist Jimmy Shaw hands over the production role to Justin Meldel- Johnsen, leading to a record that encapsulates that nebulous phrase ‘band-sounding’.

“It’s the synths, and the guitars – it’s not one or the other,” she explains. “For this record we knew that what we wanted to once again go after the Holy Grail of capturing the sound of the band live. The feeling has just always eluded us, but it’s the heart of who we are and that’s never gone away when we’re onstage... but then we get into the studio have all these other sonic ideas.”

Emily continues: “I think until now we really didn’t realise the value of what we have, it’s so precious… It’s the four of us and it’s the language we all speak”.

- - -

- - -

If 2015 full length ‘Pagans In Vegas’ found Metric leaning towards their electronic values then ‘Art Of Doubt’ is the return of the guitar – a mixture they’ve made their own, that fusion of the digital and the humane, the classic and the relentlessly future-facing.

“We’ve always had synths on our records and also in our shows,” Emily insists. “It’s hard to imagine now but when we were starting out live in 2001 in New York and LA it was kind of scandalous to have a keyboard onstage. I’ve been playing those sequential circuits since the dawn of time, so it’s cool – or a bit weird – for me to turn on the radio and hear that everyone’s cool with synths now.”

Metric entered the studio with a real sense of purpose, working hard in pre-production to define each song, to outline each detail. When the time came, they acted; when the opportunity rolled round, they seized it.

“I write all the time, I prep things,” she explains. “At this point we have a pretty elaborate work-flow. And for some reason on this record I suddenly really appreciated that we’ve been developing that this whole time. It’s really fluid now. The way of working hasn’t changed, it’s just gotten more refined.”

“All my writing is basically praying at a piano, locking yourself in a dark room, kinda vibe! I mean, sometimes I get fragments of things from travelling, but you generally get it done by putting your ass in a chair,” she says, before breaking out into gales of laughter. “Bums in seats, is maybe the more appropriate way of saying it!”

For a record so resolutely rehearsed, practised, and prepared, ‘Art Of Doubt’ is also a visceral, hell-for- leather experience. At times, Clash offers, it sounds as though you’re really losing yourself in the studio. “Well, I did,” she replies. “And it’s funny when you’re in that moment it’s awkward, because you genuinely feel what’s happening.”

“It’s all about method,” Emily continues. “There’s always a part of me at least – I don’t know about anyone else – but you almost wish you could keep your cool and not be fully immersed in the experience. Then you end up with something that isn’t as engaging, and doesn’t have enough on the line. I really push myself to not hide in the studio… and I felt like I could do that this time. I’m really happy if that’s coming across because I definitely did the work.”

Emily Haines is phenomenally hard-working. It might well be three years between Metric records but she found time to release a solo album – 2017’s excellent ‘Choir Of The Mind’ - alongside international touring. With this solo outlet behind her, she was able to approach the lyrics on ‘Art Of Doubt’ from a slightly different angle.

“It’s more descriptive, a less confessional style,” she explains. “That’s partly because I had just done a solo record as well, my second one. I think I had worked through a lot of personal stuff between making that record, and then I did this tour where the shows were quite unusual. I built a mountain for myself, and then climbed it, and then by the time I got back to Metric I was like, OK, this shit’s fun – let’s just have a good time and make a rock ‘n’ roll record! I did my therapy before I showed up in the studio.”

- - -

- - -

Not that ‘Art Of Doubt’ is simply a care-free part – sure, there are wild moments, but there are also tracks like ‘Dressed To Suppress’, or ‘Dark Saturday’, the latter of which deals with what she terms “this extreme grotesque flaunting of unthinkable wealth.”

“It’s a vignette of the reality that we live in, this repulsive, self-aggrandising, super-rich, rubbing it in our noses, world-wide,” Emily gasps. “A bit of… OK, enough is enough.”

“I think a lot of us like our lives, and our friends, and the way that we live. Just the idea of this constant barrage, being reminded of what we don’t have. This idea of ‘I’m so rich, everything is free’ as opposed to being someone whose whole meaning and purpose in life is that they’ve built it from nothing. That’s me, that’s what makes my life, my life. That’s what makes my life meaningful. And that’s true for pretty much everyone I know.”

This independence in their personal lives seeps into every area of Metric – they’re involved in each decision, and despite their success is remains a tiny, close-knit crew. “We run the company,” she says. “It’s hard to believe – I find it hard to believe – but it’s like four people running this thing. Our road crew is 10 people, and then we have our little office out of Montreal. We’re releasing all our own records, we’re funding all of this. We’re not playing with Monopoly money. It’s a deep commitment. We’re involved in every aspect.”

And it’s this simple fact that allows the personal to become political, and the political to become personal. The disgusting wealth of ‘Dark Saturday’ recalls the sweeping hard right movements emerging across the Western world, but Metric have a simple message, one that avoids stomping on the soap box. Recently touring alongside Smashing Pumpkins in the United States, they sought to use their platform to open up conversation, to help us understand one another.

“It’s not politicised in the traditional sense,” she agrees. “I don’t get up onstage and talk about my views, I don’t go on Twitter and say that. I just want to represent a certain spirit of… can we talk? And I feel like every time we’re able to hold the attention of 10,000 strangers in the middle of Iowa I feel like we’re doing something right. We are open-minded enough to find that through line. There’s got to be some universality there, I think.”

From their fusion of indie rock and electronics to their nuanced songwriting Metric have always sought to find balance, to create conversations. With ‘Art Of Doubt’ now on record shelves, it seems that they’ve started quite a few more.

Revealing a tour first, Christian music's top annual outing will be presented on a 360º “in the round” center stage, showcasing a diverse lineup helmed by supergroup Newsboys United.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (PRWEB) October 09, 2018

The Winter Jam Tour Spectacular, Christian music’s largest annual tour and one of the top first quarter tours in the world, made a series of major announcements during festivities held earlier this evening. Streamed around the world via Facebook LIVE, the event—at Nashville's Hard Rock Café—was attended by artists, industry personnel and national media. Revealing a history-making tour first, Winter Jam will be presented on a 360º “in the round” center stage, showcasing a diverse lineup helmed by supergroup Newsboys United.

Comprised of current members Michael Tait, Duncan Phillips, Jeff Frankenstein and Jody Davis, along with former members Peter Furler and Phil Joel, Newsboys United are set to take the Winter Jam stage to deliver a string of the biggest hits from the iconic band’s three-decade career. One of the most popular groups in Christian music history, Newsboys have sold more than 8 million units and amassed eight Gold® certifications, 33 #1 radio hits, four GRAMMY® nominations, two American Music Award nominations and multiple Dove Awards.

Winter Jam’s 2019 blockbuster lineup continues with GRAMMY®-nominated former “American Idol” finalist Danny Gokey; GRAMMY®-winning recording artist and "Overcomer" hitmaker Mandisa; Northern Ireland's "Count Every Blessing" worshippers Rend Collective; Skillet drummer and female solo rocker LEDGER; GRAMMY®-nominated tour creators and hosts NewSong; and Dove Award-nominated Gotee recording artist Hollyn. In addition, the Pre-Jam Party is slated to feature hip-hop recording artist Ty Brasel; rockers Manic Drive; singer/songwriter Dan Bremnes; and special guest former Stellar Kart and Audio Adrenaline frontman Adam Agee. The tour will also include a Gospel presentation from Dare2Share speakers Greg Stier or Zane Black.

Kicking off January 11 at Jacksonville, Florida’s Veterans Memorial Arena, Winter Jam is scheduled to hit a total of 44 cities, making stops at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena; Kansas City’s Sprint Center; PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh; Cincinnati’s U.S. Bank Arena; Bridgestone Arena in Nashville; and Norfolk, Virginia’s Scope Arena, among numerous other top venues, before concluding March 31 at Cleveland’s Wolstein Center.

"I’ve been extremely excited to tell people about this year’s lineup,” said NewSong founding member and Winter Jam creator Eddie Carswell. “Not only are we thrilled to tour with several artists who’ve never been part of Winter Jam before, but we can't wait to be back on the road with some of our closest friends. It's going to be fun!”

“We’re looking forward to having a 360º stage for the first time,” Carswell adds. “It’s something we’ve dreamed about and now it’s a reality for us and the fans. This setup will offer better views, more seating and surround sound. More than anything, I’m just ready to see how God is going to use all the artists, songs and speakers to draw people to Himself. He’s the reason we do this every year!”

"With Peter and Phil back onstage with us, we can't wait to bring the Newsboys United show to Winter Jam next year," says Newsboys' Michael Tait. "It's a blast to join forces with such an incredible lineup of artists, and the ministry at the heart of Winter Jam is always evident."

The Winter Jam 2019 Tour Spectacular is produced by Premier Productions and sponsored in part by ChildFund, Liberty University, Samaritan Ministries, Xtreme Conferences, Camp Electric, Premier Vacations & Events, Texas TransEastern and Wayne E. Bailey Produce.

Created and hosted by one of Christian music’s most influential bands, NewSong, Winter Jam exploded from a single show in 1995 to become the genre's benchmark tour. Throughout two decades, Winter Jam has helped provide a powerful platform for the Gospel in major arenas nationwide, consistently showcasing Christian music's biggest artists.

Earlier this year Winter Jam was crowned the top first quarter music tour in the world. Landing at #2 on Pollstar’s “2018 1Q YTD Worldwide Ticket Sales Top 100 Tours” chart, the Winter Jam 2018 Tour Spectacular took the top spot of all music tours, following #1 outing “Disney On Ice.” This year Winter Jam hit a total of 46 cities across the country from January through March, boasting 17 sold-out shows.

Breast Friends, Shango Premium Cannabis Think Pink

Two Area dispensaries join forces to assist breast cancer victims with pink merchandise sales Proceeds go toward purchase of humorous hats for cancer survivors

PORTLAND, Ore. (PRWEB) October 09, 2018

Shango Premium Cannabis dispensaries and Breast Friends, a breast cancer support group based in Tigard, are again teaming up for the annual October sale of pink merchandise for cancer patients. Shango will be selling pink-accented shirts, stickers, pins and vape batteries and chargers to raise funds to give funny hats to women who suffer hair loss during treatment.

“We give funny hats to our patients who go through chemo and have hair loss,” Breast Friends Co-Founder Becky Olson said. “Treatment is very emotional and a hit to their sensuality. The hats help them laugh at a critical time.”

After being spurned last year by three national breast cancer charities, the owners of Shango dispensaries turned to Breast Friends, a smaller national group based in Tigard. The results of the partnership with Shango thus far have been positive for Olson’s group, which took a chance on the stigma that often assails cannabis users.

“Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate and neither do we,” is the mantra Olson holds.

After the media released details of the partnership in 2017, another donor stepped forward, citing the article as inspiration.

“Someone sent us a thousand-dollar check from your release last year and said we don’t discriminate either. Something that has been controversial is now gaining better acceptance.”

Battling cancer for the fourth time, Olson decided to give CBD lotion, derived from cannabis extractions, a try.

“I never thought about cannabis as a serious solution until I asked my oncologist. My doctor is supportive of it. He said ‘anything that is natural and helps I am supportive of.’ He told me to go and find a product that works. I love my doctor’s approach, and the fact that he put natural and cannabis in the same statement is powerful.”

Portland artist Jo Gefre met Breast Friends and created a hat that complete with a funny caption that included “Has Anyone Seen my Hare”’ or “Temporarily Bald, Permanently Beautiful.”
“They can help turn the heartbreak of hair loss due to chemo therapy into an opportunity for laugh therapy,” Olson says. “Tackling a tough situation head on often is the key to getting to the other side. When we laugh, endorphins actually diminish physical and psychological pain. We believe that you heal through laughter and that this hat can be a reminder to laugh often and laugh well.”

Olson said the money donated last year purchased about a thousand hats. Breast Friends gives out more than 700 hats a year to patients. See http://www.breastfriends.org for more info.
“Cannabis is a realistic approach to side effects of breast cancer and people are becoming more acceptant of that,” Olson said.

Shango owners will present the check from pink merchandise sales at the Breast Friends annual open house on Nov. 8, sponsored by Olive Garden. Last year, the group was celebrating receiving funds of $50,000 from October events. The money will go toward free support services.

Breast Friends believes that no woman should go through the cancer experience alone. Unfortunately, it happens. Women with friends and family nearby often fail to receive the kind of emotional, spiritual or physical support they need. Breast Friends programs are designed to ensure proper support is given and received. Every woman in America will be touched by breast cancer or other women’s cancers in her lifetime. One in eight women will be diagnosed, and the other seven will know her. The goal is to reach the seven in order to help the one.

“If you want to do something to help breast cancer, we should look everywhere,” Olson said. “We’re happy to be partners with Shango and we’re glad this is an ongoing relationship.”

Shango also took part in the Breast Friends golf outing last July.

“This has been a gratifying opportunity for Shango to be able to help out a charity with the foresight to recognize the potential benefits of medical cannabis for both pre- and post-surgery situations.” said Julie Dubocq, Controller at Shango. “We admire their courage.”

Shango offers private sessions for anyone fighting cancer. “If someone fighting cancer needs special attention, we will give it to them,” Dubocq said.

Breast Friends also has taken a pro approach to cannabis during their weekly internet radio show. Olson said the show draws 10,000 to 15,000 on-demand listeners through their live podcast show on VoiceAmerica.com health and wellness channel that airs live at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and is archived by searching for Breast Friends on the site.

Breast Friends’ mission is helping women survive the trauma of cancer one friend at a time,” said Allison Hancock, executive director for the Oregon chapter. “We are thankful for the support that Shango is giving Breast Friends to raise awareness and help us continue to offer services and programs to women who are going through the cancer journey.”

Breast Friends’ governing body is made up of a board including the two co-founders, executive officers and board members who also oversee the Oregon affiliate. Breast Friends was founded in Oregon in 2000. The group has helped thousands of patients and their families. The organization has a prosthesis, bra and wig closet and offers products free to women who have little or no funds available to purchase them. The group’s Facebook page is Breast Friends of Oregon.
